Kaum ist Version 3.9 des Live-CD-Linux Knoppix fertig, kommt schon die nächste Version: Zum LinuxTag 2005, der am Mittwoch dieser Woche in Karlsruhe startet, gibt Entwickler Klaus Knopper die Version 4.0 des direkt von CD start- und nutzbaren Linux-Systems frei. Sie basiert auf dem vor kurzem freigegebenen Debian 3.1 (Sarge). Erweitert wurde Knoppix gegenüber dem Release-Stand von Sarge um Version 3.4.1 des Unix/Linux-Desktops KDE. Als weiterer Desktop ist GNOME in Version 2.8 dabei, das Open-Source-Officepaket OpenOffice gibt es in der Beta-Version der Ausgabe 2.0.



Knoppix 4.0 erscheint in einer abgespeckten CD- und einer erweiterten DVD-Version, auf dem LinuxTag ist die Erstausgabe auf DVD für 5 Euro zu bekommen. Laut Knopper konnte dank cloop-Datenkompression über 9 Gigabyte an Software aus dem Debian-Pool auf eine Single-Layer-DVD gepackt werden. Insgesamt seien über 2600 Softwarepakete mit insgesamt über 5300 Anwendungen auf der DVD vorhanden.

In Version 4.0 sind zudem einige Erweiterungen integriert, die aus den auf Knoppix basierenden Distributionen Kanotix, Quantian, Paipix und Freeduc zurückgeflossen sind. Dazu gehört etwa die Kanotix-Hardwareunterstützung für ISDN- und DSL-Adapter von AVM, ein verbesserter Festplatten-Installer, wissenschaftliche Software aus Quantian und Paipix, sowie Lernsoftware für Kinder aus Freeduc. Die DVD-Edition von Knoppix 4.0 enthält darüber hinaus beispielsweise das Software-Verteilungssystem m23 sowie die Bücher "Knoppix Kompakt" von Rainer Hattenhauer und "Knowing Knoppix" von Phil Jones.

Das mittlerweile längst nicht mehr nur für Test-, Schulungs- und Rettungszwecke gedachte Live-Betriebssystem wird direkt von der DVD oder CD gebootet und betrieben. Über Installationsskripts lässt sich aber auch ein Debian-Linux auf Festplatte einrichten. Mittels unionfs, das mit Version 3.8 eingeführt wurde, lässt sich eine RAM-Disk transparent über das Knoppix-Dateisystem auf der CD legen. Damit können im laufenden System sämtliche Dateien geändert werden; selbst das Nachinstallieren von Software in das CD-Linux ist problemlos möglich. Nutzt man das neue persistente Home-Verzeichnis, werden in einer Image-Datei nicht nur die im Home-Verzeichnis abgelegten persönlichen Dateien, sondern alle neu angelegten oder geänderten Dateien gespeichert.

Beim starten von Knoppix 4.0 kommt immer die Fehlermeldung

Ich hab schon mit "knoppix no{scsi}" und "knoppix acpi=off noapic pci=bios" gestartet, aber immer wieder der gleiche fehler. Mit "knoppix testcd" auch.

Ich glaube das hat was mit meiner S-ATA Festplatte zu tun (SCSI). Kann mir jemand helfen? Beim Kumpel klappt alles wunderbar (kein Wunder der hat ja auch keine S-ATA Festplatte der glückliche, aber wie ich mit mit meine Festplatte unter Windoofs rumgeärget habe ist ne Geschichte).
