Hier mal die Originalmeldung:

Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.

This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about.

We ask that for the wider benefit of the IT community that members and readers support Microsoft by forwarding anything they know about the leak to the Microsoft's Anti-Piracy department.

Mhm, wenn das stimmt, kann man dann sagen, dass Microsoft "open Source" ist?!
Aber bisher sind es ja nur "Gerüchte", wie man auch hier auf deutsch nach-
lesen kann. Auf der Mailing-Liste "bugtraq@securityfocus.com" können einige User
sich auch vorstellen, das die Meldung "authentisch" sein könnte.

... zumindest eine ältere Windowsversion:
Looks like old win2k code, I still see ppc, alpha, and mips in some of the
folder names. Win 2k Gold does not support any of those platforms this is
probably alpha or early beta code, and thus not useful to anyone, let alone
virus writers.


Na da bin ich doch mal auf die Reaktion von MS gespannt.

"The rumor regarding the availability of Microsoft source code is based on the speculation of an individual who saw a small section of unidentified code and thought it looked like Windows source code. Microsoft is looking into this as a matter of due diligence," the spokeswoman said.

So nun ist es amtlich, der Microsoft Windows-Source-Code ist nach "aussen" (= ins
Internet) gelangt. Dies bestätigte jetzt auch Microsoft, hier. Laut einem
Interview der Online-Zeitschrift "eweek.com" mit Microsoft handelt es sich dabei aber
nur

Weiterhin sei es nach Meinung von Microsoft kein Sicherheitsproblem, da es sich nur
um einen kleinen Teil des gesamten Source handeln würde, ausserdem sei dies gene-
rell mehr ein Fall für die Rechtsabteilung wegen "Verstoss gegen geistiges Eigentum"
als ein Fall für die "Sicherheitsabteilung". Diese Ansicht wird dadurch gestützt, das sich
bei Microsoft eine Abteilung namens "Shared Source Initiative" um den Fall zu kümmern
scheint. Eine gewisse Gefahr besteht denn aber doch, auch wenn Win2k und WinNT
nicht die aktuellsten OS von Microsoft sind, so sind sie immernoch die kommerziell
am weitesten verbreitenen Versionen. Wie BetaNews berichtet, handelt es
sich insgesamt um:

Dies ist in sofern interessant, weil damit der Source von einem Datum nach dem
offiziellen Release von Win2k stammen würde. Es befinden sich im Source-Code auch
interessante Anmerkungen und Verweise wie:

Dies ist eigentlich der Traum aller "Bad Guys" und dazu auch noch "gut" dokumentiert!
Wie "eweek.com" in einem Update mitteilt, ist der Source scheinbar zu einer
Firma namens "MainSoft" zurück verfolgbar. "MainSoft" entwickelt Unix-Applikationen
von Windows-Software. "MainSoft" ist dabei einer von der
einer der beiden Partner der Microsoft Initiative "WISE" (= Windows Interface Source Environment).
Deren Ziel ist es, Entwickler auch unter Linux die Nutzung der "winAPI" zuermöglichen
und "schmackhaft" zu machen.
